Accepting Your Unhealthy Habits and Moving Past Them

This month I invite you to have a strong intention to move past any one, single habit that you have which drives you crazy. It could be that you have a habit of eating the whole bag of potato chips when initially you opened the bag for a small handful. It could be that you bite your nails, often times without even realizing it. You get the idea.

We all have little habits that don’t cause big harm, but don’t serve us in a positive and healthy way either. So this month, I invite you to be mindful of these moments and exercise a little restraint to re-program this habit.

Below are a few keys to help you on your journey this month:

1. Start being more AWARE of what you are doing. For example, if you are a nail biter, when have you noticed that you bite your nails the most? Is it during a drive somewhere? Is it right after dinner? Is it while you watch a movie? The first step to overcoming any habit is being very mindful of when it occurs.

2. The habit you are considering moving on from today is probably a habit you’ve had for a long time. That means you are going to have a difficult time overcoming it and that simply telling yourself to no longer do this habit is probably not an option. You may consider wearing a rubber band or hair tie around your wrist. When you catch yourself in the act, due to your increased awareness, you can snap the rubber band softly on your wrist as if to interrupt the mental pattern you have set months or years ago.

3. Similar to key #2, a very powerful key is to simply distract yourself. If you know that you will eat the whole bag of potato chips when you get home from work, interrupt your routine and instead, go work out at the gym after work. Or if you know you bite your nails when you drive, call a friend on the phone to distract yourself from your normal routine.

The intention we set for this month isn’t really about how to stop biting your nails. It is a much larger lesson to be in control of your body and mind and to go after the things you want in life. You are blessed to be put here to live your life with passion and excitement, and to make a difference. Often times we are way too hard on ourselves – and that is a choice.
