“Do the thing you fear, and the death of fear is certain.”
I found that quote on a fortune cookie and it resonated so deeply with me. I’ve carried it with me ever since. Anytime I face an obstacle or feel overwhelmed, I think of that quote. This sentence gives me the reminder that I can do anything. And with God in our hearts, anything truly is possible.
Living in fear means you are living life in a ‘small’ way. We fear change, we fear opportunity, we fear our power … we were not put here to live small and live in fear.
We are meant to grow, and learn and thrive! Rae Smith said, “Never be afraid to fall apart because it is an opportunity to rebuild yourself the way you wish you had been all along.”
The beautiful thing about life is that we are gifted with the power to choose who we are and what direction we go in. If you are unhappy with your life in any way, shape or form, it is time for a change. Change can bring up serious fears in us. We simply must “feel the fear and change anyway.”
If you are feeling uncomfortable or unhappy about your life right now, the first step is to find out why. Through prayer, exercise, writing, talking with friends, contemplation – whatever your method of choice is – you want to find out what is causing your unhappiness. This really is the challenge, because once you’ve discovered where your discomfort stems from (it is usually something inside us), then taking action to improve is a matter of taking positive steps forward. Making positive decisions in our life to get you closer to that place of joy, instead of decisions that place you further and further away.
Something else that really helps me when I am feeling a growth spurt coming on, is to recall other times in my life I have felt challenged. Did I survive those experiences? Did I grow and become a stronger person because of them? Do I believe I can get through challenges again? Knowing I have stepped into the challenge and made positive decisions to change and grow, gives me unmatched confidence to overcome any obstacle.
Fear is a nasty feeling that grows the more we give attention to it. The best thing to do is recognize you are feeling fear, then take action so you no longer feel that way.
